Culture vs War (Ukraine)
Followed by a Q&A with:
Liudmyla Sergiienko — Co-founder of KRYLA Culture CIC
Yuliia Ivanova — UK Coordinator of the Culture vs War project
Alyona Yavorska-Kaporina — Award-winning film director, creative producer, BAFTA Connect member
“The battle for Ukraine is the battle for humanity.”
"Capernaum hits hard, but rewards viewers with a smart, compassionate, and ultimately stirring picture of lives in the balance."
Io Capitano (Senegal/Italy)
Io Capitano competed for the Golden Lion at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Lion for Matteo Garrone's direction and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Seydou Sarr's performance.
"A journey toward hope,
Io Capitano perambulates through
the ravishing Saharan landscape encountering the most sublime and debased corners of humanity."
Hit the Road جاده خاکی (Iran)
"There is a sparseness to Hit the Road that reveals the intuitiveness of Panahi's filmmaking, his grasp of these characters and how they tug and poke at each other, and his understanding of the ways fear, paranoia, and loss turn us into people we might not like, let alone recognize."
"Its 93 minutes whip by so airily,
it's possible not to realize how much you've learned to love the family whose road trip you've shared in, until the credits roll and you immediately start to miss them."
"Thrillingly inventive, satisfyingly textured and infused with warmth and humanity, this is a triumph."
Hit the Road جاده خاکی (Iran)
VENUE CHANGE - this will now be shown in the MARGARET FALL LECTURE THEATRE at The Universtity Campus, NOT outdoors on Alexander Square
Winner of the Best Feature Film at the 65th BFI London Film Festival, among other major awards, “there is a sparseness to Hit the Road that reveals the intuitiveness of Panahi's filmmaking, his grasp of these characters and how they tug and poke at each other, and his understanding of the ways fear, paranoia, and loss turn us into people we might not like, let alone recognize." We follow a chaotic, tender family that is on a road trip across a rugged landscape and fussing over the sick dog and getting on each others' nerves. Only the mysterious older brother is quiet….
In This World (UK)
Michael Winterbottom's acclaimed film, a Golden Bear Best Film-winner at Berlin, trails two young Afghan refugees on a perilous journey to hopeful asylum in England - a powerfully moving and gripping film shot in almost documentary style.
Blurring the lines between fact and fiction, "In This World" tells a harrowing but important story about the plight of refugees. Michael Winterbottom's tough, impassive docu-drama used small digital video cameras, improvisation, guerrilla filming and available light, to follow the overland refugee route from Pakistan through Iran, Turkey and Italy up to Sangatte, Dover and beyond. Made in 2002, it seems even more relevant today
Flee (Denmark/Afghanistan)
"Depicting the refugee experience through vivid animation, Flee pushes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking to present a moving memoir of self-discovery."
The film was frequently ranked one of the best films of 2021 and garnered numerous accolades, mainly for animated and documentary categories including Best Feature Film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Best Animated Feature – Independent at 49th Annie Awards, in both cases the first animated documentary film to win.
Limbo (UK)
The film was named as an Official Selection of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, and garnered several awards and nominations, including at the Cairo International Film Festival, the British Independent Film Awards, and the British Academy Film Awards.
"A profoundly uplifting portrait of the refugee experience, Limbo is distinguished by its offbeat tone -- and overall impressive work from debuting director Ben Sharrock.”
